“President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration previously called on conservatives to create new academic journals and to fund science that would explicitly back right-wing policy goals.

“Heidi Overton made the comments in a December 2023 appearance on The Tank, a podcast by the conservative think tank America First Policy Institute. Overton, who has a medical degree and is now a White House aide, was previously chief policy officer at the think tank. There she led health care policy and was director of the institute’s Center for a Healthy America.

 

“In the 2023 interview, Overton called for new science journals that would be dedicated to “conservative-based” science and described a 20-year vision for changing the infrastructure of funding and research to make it more aligned with conservative policy. This vision included “alternate systems” for publishing research.”

 

I’m an actual, you know, scientist. Real science is evidence-based. What she's advocating is right-wing propaganda to replace science. Stalin followed her path of substituting politics for science by elevating Lysenkoism to replace genetics and agronomy. It didn't end well.

Yes, the CDC can change its mind

The Nobel Laureate economist Paul Samuelson famously acknowledged in a Meet the Press interview: “Well when events change, I change my mind. What do you do?” This observation applies to the advice from medical authorities such as the CDC and WHO during the COVID pandemic. Some members of the public are fond of pillorying these agencies for having published different guidelines at different times, as though health officials are in the business of issuing ex cathedra dogma rather than responding to incomplete and ambiguous information. Science doesn’t deal in proof, it deals with the weight of evidence. A scientific hypothesis is one that is capable of being tested and falsified by experiment. I get it. The economics of deportation

The Trump administration is threatening to deport >10 million people. These are people who, regardless of their immigration status, are contributing to the economy and jobs by purchasing goods and service (“job creators”) and contributing to social programs like Social Security and Medicare. Indeed, if they are undocumented, they will never see benefits to the programs they subsidize, since they use fake SS numbers. How will Trump’s deportation hurt working class Americans?
