Long COVID is still a thing

Much has been made of the fact that being vaccinated does prevent you from catching COVID. Of course, that was never the claim; the claim was that vaccination would keep you out of the ED and the morgue, a claim that enjoys abundant support.

Less well appreciated is that vaccination also protects from Long COVID.

Furthermore, even now, well after the acute phase of the COVID pandemic has passed, an estimated 30,000 Americans are newly diagnosed with long COVID each year. But this is far fewer than expected, based on 2023 data. Thus, long COVID appears to have become a hidden cause of disease and disability.

“When research suggests that as many as one in six patients with COVID-19 may develop post-acute sequelae but those statistics are inconsistent with what doctors are reporting, many start to deny the seriousness of long COVID. This, in turn, lays the groundwork for an inadequate response from policymakers. In fact, in February 2025, the Trump administration ended the Secretary's Advisory Committee on long COVID and closed the Office of Long COVID Research and Practice.”

Explain to me how ignoring long COVID is making America healthy again.

Yes, the CDC can change its mind

The Nobel Laureate economist Paul Samuelson famously acknowledged in a Meet the Press interview: “Well when events change, I change my mind. What do you do?” This observation applies to the advice from medical authorities such as the CDC and WHO during the COVID pandemic. Some members of the public are fond of pillorying these agencies for having published different guidelines at different times, as though health officials are in the business of issuing ex cathedra dogma rather than responding to incomplete and ambiguous information. Science doesn’t deal in proof, it deals with the weight of evidence. A scientific hypothesis is one that is capable of being tested and falsified by experiment. I get it. I used to teach problem-based learning to first year medical students, and they often struggled with what to do with incomplete and ambiguous information, which is what physicians in clinics do every day. The economics of deportation

The Trump administration is threatening to deport >10 million people. These are people who, regardless of their immigration status, are contributing to the economy and jobs by purchasing goods and service (“job creators”) and contributing to social programs like Social Security and Medicare. Indeed, if they are undocumented, they will never see benefits to the programs they subsidize, since they use fake SS numbers. How will Trump’s deportation hurt working class Americans?
