Rehabilitating eugenics

During the height of the COVID pandemic, serious-sounding people were advocating herd immunity as an alternative to vaccination, masking and social distancing. Seriously.

Probably the most devastating example of herd immunity in humans was the Black Plague. A third to a half of the human population in Europe (25-50 million) died from plague, but the survivors had herd immunity. Of course, a generation later, another cycle of plague killing was visited on the unexposed generation.

Measles isn’t as deadly as the plague or even COVID, but it is far more contagious. There is a vaccine for measles, but the herd immunity boffins are frightening parents away.

“Measles is back. Children are dying of diseases the United States once eliminated, not because medicine failed, but because ideology did. Under the banner of “Make America Healthy Again,” anti-vaccine politics have rebranded preventable death as freedom and neglect as nature. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said no vaccine is “safe and effective,” then denied saying it when confronted with his own words. 

 

“Dr. Mehmet Oz once described reopening schools during a deadly pandemic as an “appetizing opportunity,” explicitly acknowledging that it would increase mortality. 

 

“At national scale, that logic is not abstract: when millions of children are exposed during an active pandemic, even small increases in mortality translate into thousands of preventable deaths. This is not health policy. It is a moral choice—to let people die and call it natural.”

 

Yes, death is natural, as is contagious disease. Know what else is natural—your immune system. Vaccines exploit your body’s natural reaction to immunogens to prevent premature death from preventable disease. That anyone in government should advise against vaccines in the wealthiest country in the third decade of the 21st century is an unalloyed disgrace.

Yes, the CDC can change its mind

The Nobel Laureate economist Paul Samuelson famously acknowledged in a Meet the Press interview: “Well when events change, I change my mind. What do you do?” This observation applies to the advice from medical authorities such as the CDC and WHO during the COVID pandemic. Some members of the public are fond of pillorying these agencies for having published different guidelines at different times, as though health officials are in the business of issuing ex cathedra dogma rather than responding to incomplete and ambiguous information. Science doesn’t deal in proof, it deals with the weight of evidence. A scientific hypothesis is one that is capable of being tested and falsified by experiment. I get it. The economics of deportation

The Trump administration is threatening to deport >10 million people. These are people who, regardless of their immigration status, are contributing to the economy and jobs by purchasing goods and service (“job creators”) and contributing to social programs like Social Security and Medicare.
