The Kirk Cult is headhunting

I see where Karen Attiah, an editor for the Washington Post, was fired for quoting Charlie Kirk’s outrageous and racist statements. I stopped reading the WaPo after they refused to endorse a presidential candidate. That was just the final straw, as I saw them trying to compete for the Fox News demographic. 

As Josh Marhall notes in the link, the MAGA/Kirk Cult is out to avenge anything remotely critical about their recently departed propaganda minister. They’re all about freedom of speech, except when it comes to other people’s freedom of speech. Just like Kirk said he was fine with innocent lives being sacrificed to preserve the Scalia interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Of course, Charlie didn’t mean *his* life. It’s only a matter of time before some cult member shoots or blows up innocent people. That’s what Timothy McVeigh was about: don’t tread on me, but I can tread on thee.

This is Charlie Kirk’s legacy. Personal attacks on anyone who doesn’t lament his passing and praise his vitriolic politics. How sad for America.

In 1998, I traveled to Moscow for the first time to teach in a summer course at the Russian Academy. The week before, we were on vacation and I heard on the radio “Today, the ruble lost 100% of its value.” This news was arresting—it meant that the ruble was worthless. That seemed unlikely. I agree with RFK Jr.

The big C

Nobody wants to get cancer. And there is no sure path to avoiding cancer. There are a number of gene alleles that predispose to cancer risk. If you inherit one of these alleles, your risk of cancer is higher than average. That doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. Knowing you’re at higher risk means you should undergo more frequent testing (breast imaging, colonoscopy, prostate exams, etc). Early detection improves survival. There are a number of other “lifestyle” risk factors for cancer: smoking, alcohol, sun exposure, obesity and aging.
