Freeze peach

As a lifelong supporter of the ACLU, I take a back seat to nobody in my support for the 1st Amendment. But the 1st Amendment only enjoins the government from interfering with freedom of expression. Private entities are not covered. 

“YouTube will offer creators a way to rejoin the streaming platform if they were banned for violating COVID-19 and election misinformation policies that are no longer in effect, its parent company Alphabet said Tuesday.

 

“In a letter submitted in response to subpoenas from the House Judiciary Committee, attorneys for Alphabet said the decision to bring back banned accounts reflected the company's commitment to free speech. It said the company values conservative voices on its platform and recognizes their reach and important role in civic discourse.”

When did lying become a “conservative” voice? Real conservatives valorize facts and evidence and reject propaganda. The voices opposing COVID-19 are not “conservative,” they are right-wing extremists. 

YouTube is free to reject lies. It is also free to host liars. It is a private company, exempt from the 1st Amendment. That includes both lies about COVID and lies about conservatives. Lying about COVID and the COVID vaccine is not “political debate.”

The ruble is collapsing

In 1998, I traveled to Moscow for the first time to teach in a summer course at the Russian Academy. The week before, we were on vacation and I heard on the radio “Today, the ruble lost 100% of its value.” This news was arresting—it meant that the ruble was worthless. That seemed unlikely. I agree with RFK Jr.

The big C

Nobody wants to get cancer. And there is no sure path to avoiding cancer. There are a number of gene alleles that predispose to cancer risk. If you inherit one of these alleles, your risk of cancer is higher than average. That doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. Knowing you’re at higher risk means you should undergo more frequent testing (breast imaging, colonoscopy, prostate exams, etc). Early detection improves survival. There are a number of other “lifestyle” risk factors for cancer: smoking, alcohol, sun exposure, obesity and aging.
