Trump re-branding

In his latest effort to control the news cycle and distract from the Epstein scandal, Trump wants to re-brand the Department of Defense as the Department of War. That was its original name, of course. It was changed to the Defense Department after WWII.

“As you know, we won World War I, we won World War II, we won everything. Now we have a Department of Defense, we’re defenders. I don’t know…,” Trump continued.

“Defense? I don’t want to be defense only. We want defense but we want offense too, if that’s OK,” he added. “As Department of War, we won everything, we won everything, and I think we’re going to have to go back to that.”

We won everything?

Any serious student of WWII military history will tell you that the Soviet Union defeated Germany, the British defeated Italy and the US defeated Japan. WWII was won by the allies, not just by the US.

But if “the anti-war president” wants to have a War Department and a Secretary of War, fine. It will end the masquerade. The Vietnam War wasn’t national defense. The US invasion and military occupation of Iraq wasn’t national defense. The recent US bombing of Iran was an act of war, not national defense. Let’s call it what it is.

In 1998, I traveled to Moscow for the first time to teach in a summer course at the Russian Academy. The week before, we were on vacation and I heard on the radio “Today, the ruble lost 100% of its value.” This news was arresting—it meant that the ruble was worthless. That seemed unlikely. I agree with RFK Jr.

The big C

Nobody wants to get cancer. And there is no sure path to avoiding cancer. There are a number of gene alleles that predispose to cancer risk. If you inherit one of these alleles, your risk of cancer is higher than average. That doesn’t mean you can’t do anything.
