Respecting our troops

The way we show respect for our troops is not by standing up for the pledge or putting out little flags in cemeteries on Memorial Day. It’s by never putting them in harm’s way unless they are defending against an existential threat to America and by never putting them into positions that they haven’t been trained for. You can tell that Donald “Cadet Bone Spurs” Trump has no respect for the military. 

“A resource counselor for the GI Rights Hotline says they’ve been receiving more calls than usual. 

“We've been getting around 200 calls a month in normal times. I had 50 calls on Sunday,” Steve Woolford told Lolita Lopez at NBC Los Angeles, elaborating that most of the calls are from service members, their family and others following Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to LA.

 

“These calls to a hotline for GI Rights, which we linked to here previously, come amid confusion about the deployment to Los Angeles, including a federal appeals court ruling late Thursday that the Trump administration can maintain control of National Guard troops Trump sent to LA against the wishes of the Governor. This ruling is a pause of the order to return the troops to the California Governor’s control earlier on Thursday. The matter of who constitutionally has authority over the National Guard will be taken up on Tuesday.

 

“Some of the troops are very troubled by what’s happening, including being asked to point at gun at a fellow US citizen who is just exercising their right to free speech.

 

“This person never envisioned what they were signing up to do as being a situation where they might point a gun at a fellow US citizen who they might think is just exercising free speech rights or something like that. So this was someone who is very troubled about what's happening,” Woolford told NBC Los Angeles, describing one of the calls.”

Where are all the ammosexual one-man militias? Where is the NRA? Where are the fake politician patriots who either support this abuse of our men and women in uniform or who are silent as it takes place?

Feh.

Over at jabberwocking.com , Kevin Drum blames pro-choice writers for failing to make the case for reproductive choice. Well, from everything I've read, a clear majority of Americans believe that Roe should still stand. Seems like the case has been made, and if we lived in a truly representative democracy, a limited national right to abortion would be preserved. But beyond that reality, I think Drum has it exactly backwards. Why does the burden of proof fall on those advocating for personal autonomy? Seems to me the null hypothesis is that women should be allowed to make decisions about their own health, and that the justification for nanny state intrusion into such decisions rests with the minority who assert state coercion. Two sides

  Yes, there are two sides to every question. In most cases, there is a correct side and a wrong side. In the case of Kamala Harris, the correct side is that she was born a US citizen. The wrong side is that her parents had to be citizens or permanent residents for her to be a citizen. Black Earth

 Just finished reading “Black Earth: The Holocaust as history and warning” by Timothy Snyder. It is a detailed account of the Holocaust, as well as an effort to abstract lessons from this history for our time. Like his book “Bloodlands,” Snyder’s “Black Earth” makes for painful reading. As the grandson of a Ukrainian Jew and the son of a Jew, I would have been targeted in the Holocaust had I been in the wrong place. I had read several histories of Europe in World War II that included the Holocaust. I knew the basic story of the Holocaust and Hitler’s anti-Semitic vision. I learned a great deal by reading this book. I won’t belabor the ghoulish atrocities committed by the Nazis and their collaborators. To summarize them here would be to trivialize the enormity of the crimes and invite pointless debate about who did what and who suffered more.
