Weapons of mass stupidity


mRNA vaccines have proven to overwhelmingly successful in blunting the COVID-19 pandemic. They are also as safe or safer than any other vaccine. So what’s up with a small group of Republicans (yes, they’re all Republicans) in the Minnesota legislature who want to criminalize mRNA vaccines?

“A group of eight Republicans in the Minnesota House have introduced legislation (HF3219) that would designate certain vaccines and medical treatments as “weapons of mass destruction” and make possessing or administering them a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

 

“The legislation specifically targets messenger RNA (mRNA) treatments, which include several COVID-19 vaccines. Those vaccines have saved millions of lives and are considered one of the most important medical and public health achievements of the 21st century so far.

 

“The bill’s language appears to have been drafted by Joseph Sansone, a Florida hypnotist and conspiracy theorist who believes that mRNA treatments are “nanoparticle injections” that amount to “biological and technological weapons of mass destruction.”

“The language in the bill further bans “nanotechnology or nanoparticles that alter genes and create a biosynthetic cell replication,” which could impact other cutting-edge medical technologies like CRISPR. It also bans “any human gene therapy product for any infectious disease indication.”

 

“The bill compels state and local authorities to “use all lawful means necessary” to enforce its provisions, and would subject authorities to prosecution under existing weapons of mass destruction statutes if they refused to investigate alleged violations of the law.”

 

This is just stupid on stilts. Look, if anything, it’s unvaccinated people who become infected who are “weapons of mass destruction.” They not only infect other people, but during their infection, the virus is mutating to potentially more dangerous forms.

Since there’s no nanoparticles or nanotechnology involved in the COVID mRNA vaccine and the vaccine doesn’t alter genes or create a “biosynthetic cell replication technology [sic],” those prohibitions could stand since they’re comically irrelevant.

The only infection I see here is that the Minnesota GOP has caught a bad case of the stupids.

Over at jabberwocking.com , Kevin Drum blames pro-choice writers for failing to make the case for reproductive choice. Well, from everything I've read, a clear majority of Americans believe that Roe should still stand. Seems like the case has been made, and if we lived in a truly representative democracy, a limited national right to abortion would be preserved. But beyond that reality, I think Drum has it exactly backwards. Why does the burden of proof fall on those advocating for personal autonomy? Two sides

  Yes, there are two sides to every question. In most cases, there is a correct side and a wrong side. In the case of Kamala Harris, the correct side is that she was born a US citizen. Black Earth

 Just finished reading “Black Earth: The Holocaust as history and warning” by Timothy Snyder. It is a detailed account of the Holocaust, as well as an effort to abstract lessons from this history for our time. Like his book “Bloodlands,” Snyder’s “Black Earth” makes for painful reading. As the grandson of a Ukrainian Jew and the son of a Jew, I would have been targeted in the Holocaust had I been in the wrong place. I had read several histories of Europe in World War II that included the Holocaust. I knew the basic story of the Holocaust and Hitler’s anti-Semitic vision. I learned a great deal by reading this book. I won’t belabor the ghoulish atrocities committed by the Nazis and their collaborators. To summarize them here would be to trivialize the enormity of the crimes and invite pointless debate about who did what and who suffered more.
