The Trump Administration hates veterans


Trump called fallen American soldiers “suckers” and “losers.” Presumably because they didn’t find a podiatrist who could claim they had “bone spurs.” Now the Trump Administration is punishing living veterans for their service. In the latest episode:

“The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said Thursday that it will end a mortgage-rescue program designed to help veterans who have fallen behind on their mortgages keep their homes.”

“For thousands of veterans, it's not their fault that they're in this predicament. The vets had reached out to their mortgage companies during a time of financial hardship and were told that by taking advantage of the VA's mortgage forbearance program they could skip some mortgage payments and have an affordable way to get current on their mortgages again. 

 

“After mortgage rates spiked from around 3 percent to 7 percent in 2022, however, the only affordable way for these vets to do that was through what's called a "partial claim" that allowed the vets to move the missed payments to the back of their loan term, and then just resume paying their mortgage. But in October of 2022, the VA suddenly pulled the plug on that partial claim program, stranding tens of thousands of vets with no affordable way to get current and start paying their loans again.”

Call me a conservative, but I’m one who thinks that America owes a debt to veterans, not the other way around. I’m a taxpayer who is happy to see his tax money go to a project that helps keep veterans in their houses, even knowing that many of those vets voted for Trump. YMMV.

Who chooses?

Over at jabberwocking.com , Kevin Drum blames pro-choice writers for failing to make the case for reproductive choice. Well, from everything I've read, a clear majority of Americans believe that Roe should still stand. Seems like the case has been made, and if we lived in a truly representative democracy, a limited national right to abortion would be preserved. But beyond that reality, I think Drum has it exactly backwards. Why does the burden of proof fall on those advocating for personal autonomy? Seems to me the null hypothesis is that women should be allowed to make decisions about their own health, and that the justification for nanny state intrusion into such decisions rests with the minority who assert state coercion. Black Earth

 Just finished reading “Black Earth: The Holocaust as history and warning” by Timothy Snyder. It is a detailed account of the Holocaust, as well as an effort to abstract lessons from this history for our time. Like his book “Bloodlands,” Snyder’s “Black Earth” makes for painful reading. As the grandson of a Ukrainian Jew and the son of a Jew, I would have been targeted in the Holocaust had I been in the wrong place. I had read several histories of Europe in World War II that included the Holocaust. I knew the basic story of the Holocaust and Hitler’s anti-Semitic vision. I learned a great deal by reading this book. I won’t belabor the ghoulish atrocities committed by the Nazis and their collaborators. To summarize them here would be to trivialize the enormity of the crimes and invite pointless debate about who did what and who suffered more.
