Sen. Cassidy accepts RFK Jr’s vapor-clad promises

Sen. Bill Cassidy, MD (R-La.) is a physician. I’m sure he’s pretty smart, but as I’m frequently caused to observe, the traits of high intelligence are unlinked. Dr. Cassidy is exercising poor medical judgement by supporting RFK Jr.’s nomination for Secretary of HHS, although he may be showing good political judgement.


“Sen. Bill Cassidy, MD (R-La.), said he received numerous pledges from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration to protect medicine and science -- particularly regarding vaccines -- that clinched his support for the HHS secretary nominee.

 

“Cassidy said Kennedy and the administration promised an "unprecedentedly close collaborative working relationship" that includes the two of them meeting or speaking "multiple times a month." They also said that Kennedy could appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee -- which Cassidy currently chairs -- quarterly if requested.

 

“Kennedy will work within current approval and safety monitoring systems, and not establish parallel systems. He'll also maintain recommendations from CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) without changes, and statements that vaccines don't cause autism won't be removed from the CDC website.

 

“Kennedy will also not use "subversive techniques ... like sue-and-settle to change policies enacted by Congress without first going through Congress," Cassidy said.

 

“He also noted that Kennedy asked for his input on hiring decisions at HHS beyond Senate-confirmed positions.”

LOL! RFK Jr is a well-known liar and fabulist. Cassidy is playing Charlie Brown to RFK Jr’s Lucy and the football. Once RFK Jr is approved, Cassidy knows he has no leverage. This is deeply dangerous for America.

Who chooses?

Over at jabberwocking.com , Kevin Drum blames pro-choice writers for failing to make the case for reproductive choice. Well, from everything I've read, a clear majority of Americans believe that Roe should still stand. Seems like the case has been made, and if we lived in a truly representative democracy, a limited national right to abortion would be preserved. But beyond that reality, I think Drum has it exactly backwards. Why does the burden of proof fall on those advocating for personal autonomy? Seems to me the null hypothesis is that women should be allowed to make decisions about their own health, and that the justification for nanny state intrusion into such decisions rests with the minority who assert state coercion. Black Earth

 Just finished reading “Black Earth: The Holocaust as history and warning” by Timothy Snyder. It is a detailed account of the Holocaust, as well as an effort to abstract lessons from this history for our time. Like his book “Bloodlands,” Snyder’s “Black Earth” makes for painful reading. As the grandson of a Ukrainian Jew and the son of a Jew, I would have been targeted in the Holocaust had I been in the wrong place. I had read several histories of Europe in World War II that included the Holocaust. I knew the basic story of the Holocaust and Hitler’s anti-Semitic vision. I learned a great deal by reading this book. I won’t belabor the ghoulish atrocities committed by the Nazis and their collaborators. To summarize them here would be to trivialize the enormity of the crimes and invite pointless debate about who did what and who suffered more.
